Project Name: One-day training session on rural land use planning

Project summary and highlights:

The Halton Region Federation of Agriculture, in partnership with the Hamilton Wentworth Federation of Agriculture and the Niagara Federation of Agriculture hosted a one-day training session of rural land use planning.  With over 40 farmers in attendance, Planscape provided an excellent presentation and provided the power point to be shared.

How were funds used, any partner contributions besides the Federation?

Each federation involved was to support the project with either monetary or in-kind donation of $1,550 each.

HWFA and NFA both decided to provide a monetary donation.

Donations were received from Maura Romanelli, System Fencing, Post Structures, and Galor Farm Equipment totalling; $700.00

Were there any organizations that partnered in-kind contributions?

HRFA provided in-kind donations from:

Country Heritage Park – facility rental waived, value $ 3,500 as posted on website

Terra Cotta Cookies – approximate value $110

Hilton Hotel – snacks $100

Describe lasting and relevant impact to the OFA membership.  

This project equipped approximately 40 people with in-depth knowledge of planning requirements in Ontario.  Most participants were from the Board of Directors from the three federations, equipping them with information to share with their members.  A few OFA staff were able to attend and participate as well.

This event created a stronger relationship between the three federations involved, and a few individuals from other agricultural organizations as well.

This event also created a relationship with Planscape, and new funders to our organization.

Bonus – any lessons learned, or surprises?

• We were amazed at the level of attention of all participants for this project and would suggest it for any federation to engage in.
• Planscape was amazing to work with.
• Sponsorships are not something HRFA has actively engaged in and happy to see everyone try to bring in sponsorships.
• Plan to have a dedicated board member responsible to promotional coverage and pictures during the event.  Administrative staff are engaged in event happenings and difficult to do both.
