Algoma-area Agricultural Awareness
The Algoma Federation of Agriculture (AFA) is planning several outreach projects to increase connections between its membership and the general public’s awareness of road safety during peak seasons.
Highlights of Agriculture in Algoma tour
In partnership with the Algoma Soil & Crop Improvement Association, this crop tour will encourage farmers & stakeholders to visit a select number of farms, learn about on-farm initiatives and crop conditions and network with other farmers. This will strengthen future collaboration between the two associations, strengthen the presence of the federation within the local community and ensure that the AFA continues to connect with local farmers and bring value to them.
Plastic Compactor Demonstration
The AFA purchased two plastic compactors for community use in 2020 and is planning a ‘field day’ to demonstrate the use of the compactor, educate farmers & the community on the pilot and advocate on behalf of this sustainability initiative. This event will be hosted in partnership with the Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance during the summer months.
Lane-sign Program
This seasonal sign program would improve farmer safety and awareness of slow-moving vehicles. This project includes individual lane-signs that would indicate ‘Caution Wagon Turning’ and would be used by farmers when hauling wagons. This project would enhance the visibility of the organization and bring additional awareness to an important issue in the area.
