Project Name: Community Engagement
Project summary and highlights:
FFA supported local food by hosting a farm and agriculture event. FFA supported local food banks with financial donations. A bus tour on June 20th to several local farms was organized to promote locally grown food and improve awareness of what is available in the community. Several politicians, staff and local MPP were invited on the tour to see what was available beyond the city limits. A politician package was made available to showcase the economic benefits of Agriculture in Frontenac County. This package was very popular, and we had a request to have more available for those councillors and staff who were not able to attend the tour. OFA researchers Jason Bent and Allison von Westerholt attended and spoke about the OFA research team and the economic development opportunities available and what OFA has available for municipalities. The farm event was held at Kevin & Suzanne Bovey’s place (3851 Davidson Road, Inverary) on July 19th. A BBQ meal was made available. The South Frontenac Mayor and local councillors were invited to speak on any rural economic & community development opportunities to develop local food initiatives.
Were there any organizations that partnered in-kind contributions?
FFA farmers and members Suzanne and Kevin Bovey who also own Maple Country donated a chain saw as a grand door prize. The City of Kingston was supposed to help finance the bus tour but unfortunately reneged.
