Project Name: Algoma – Summer Bus Tour
Project summary and highlights:
The AFA hosted a summer bus tour on August 8, 2025 to showcase changes in Algoma agriculture. Approximately 50 farmers, agricultural stakeholders and municipal councillors attended, enjoying a lunch before visiting 3 farms (Hawbury Farms, Vine Family Maple Syrup & Algoma Cooperative Feed Yard), learning about crop production, land clearing, maple syrup and cattle feeding.
How were funds used, any partner contributions besides the Federation?
Funds were used to cover food and buses. The Algoma Soil & Crop Improvement Association covered the cost of the hall (for lunch and washrooms).
Describe lasting and relevant impact to the OFA membership.
Farmers and the public in Algoma had the opportunity to meet other farmers, learn best management practices and better understand how farming in the area has changed. Land clearing practices & costs were discussed, which is essential to bring additional land into production. Possible expansions in crop storage and distribution were also discussed, necessary for a continued expansion into crop production. Opportunities for beef backgrounding were also shared with farmers.
Bonus – any lessons learned, or surprises?
- very well attended and well received, a lot of people really appreciated seeing how agriculture in the area is changing
- bus tour lasted from 12:30 – 5:30 and energy/attention felt like it was lagging a bit by the last stop; next time we may only have two stops or break up the stops with lunch
