Project Name: Grain Extraction Workshop
Project Summary:
Early in 2023 our board decided to host a grain extraction workshop for the first responders in our county. Having a couple of fire fighters as directors helped us get a perspective of what is desired and where and how the training is offered. Canadian facilitators were booked for the year but there was a USA company, SATRA, (Safety and Technical Rescue Association) who was available for a July date, so we booked them. OFA approved Revive funds for this event and we were on our way. Response was great and the sixty spots in the workshop filled up quickly. Wire transfers for funds were complicated and then the facilitator was refused access to cross the border with the equipment, so the July date was cancelled. Not to give up, we were able to book a November date with a new location at the TCO facility, as the elevator receiving grain was not available to host in November. Once again, the workshop registered to capacity with fire fighters, as well as a few paramedics for the November 4th 202 date. Specialized equipment was brought in so hands on procedures could be practised giving first responders the specific knowledge they need to do on farm extractions in the case of emergencies. Lunch was graciously provided with funds contributed by the local Grain Farmers of Ontario. Local news reported on the event and the Ontario Farmer also published an article.
Partnership:
We partnered with the local Grain Farmers of Ontario association to supply lunch for the participants.
Impact to OFA membership:
This opportunity was appreciated by the local first responders and participation was at capacity for the trainer. All were happy with the specific knowledge gained by the exposure and hands on practice. This workshop gives our farming community a tool for first responders in case of emergency in this county.
