Project Name: Safety Buckets
Project summary and highlights:
This was a safety awareness project that provided Lambton County farmers who attended our Lambton Federation of Agriculture AGM, a safety bucket filled with safety protection items relevant to everyday farming operations. Through the Revive Fund we were able to prepare 100 safety buckets for local area farmers.
How were funds used, any partner contributions besides the Federation?
Lambton Federation used the Revive Fund donation to purchase 5L buckets with lids and provided the following safety items in the buckets for our members: 3M particulate respirator, safety glasses, earmuff protection, disposable coveralls, and flock lined gloves. We did not have any partner contributions for this project.
Describe lasting and relevant impact to the OFA membership.
The funding provided by the OFA for the purchase of the safety buckets and safety items has a lasting and relevant impact to the OFA by enhancing farm safety and fostering a culture of preparedness. These safety buckets, equipped with essential personal protective equipment, ensure that farmers and farm workers have immediate access to critical supplies to protect themselves against hazards. This initiative not only helps prevent minor injuries but also reinforces the importance of farm safety protocols. By investing in practical safety measures, the OFA supports the well-being of LFA members and promotes compliance with safety regulations contributing to a more resilient agricultural community and ultimately strengthening the long-term sustainability of local farming operations.
Bonus – any lessons learned, or surprises?
Key lessons learned include:
- Preparedness matters – having safety supplies on hand and ready for use significantly improves personal safety and the reduction in workplace incidents
- Safety education is essential – while the buckets provide a positive step forward it also highlights the importance of continued safety training, keeping safety in the forefront of farmers minds, encouraging farmers to routinely inspect and restock the contents of their buckets.
- Fostering a safety mindset – as a collective action demonstrating the value of farm safety, the distribution of the buckets fostered discussion on the workplace hazards that farmers face and encouraged proactive steps towards a safer work environment.
