OFA has submitted comments to Environment and Climate Change Canada through their consultation process on the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS).
OFA generally supports the the targets and implementation of the FSDS and emphasizes that environmental sustainability in agriculture depends on strong farm profitability, competitiveness, and resilience.
OFA encourages the federal government to prioritize voluntary, incentive-based programs supported by stable, long-term funding rather than overly prescriptive regulations. OFA also highlights the need to strengthen rural broadband, protect farmland through agricultural impact assessments, invest in rural energy infrastructure, and ensure transportation and biodiversity policies balance environmental goals with farm viability.
OFA calls for stronger support for Canadian food procurement and fair waste-management policies for rural communities. Overall, OFA stresses that achieving Canada’s sustainability goals will require practical, collaborative approaches that recognize the essential role of agriculture in the economy, food security, and environmental stewardship.
