What do you need to know before you raise a new structure for your agriculture business?
Aaron Stewardson, CBCO, Manager of Development Services and Chief Building Official for the Municipality of Bluewater, looked to answer this and many other questions during the OFA’s latest Lunch N’ Learn Webinar.
Joined by over 120 others, the Wednesday noontime session on the Ontario Building Code (OBC) looked to break down what classifies a structure under the OBC, what classifies it under the 1995 National Farm Building Code (NFBC), and how the newer OBC may complicate some agricultural construction projects.
Stewardson touched on the different classifications of farm buildings (G1, G2, G3, and G4) and what is required for each of them under the codes. Some clarifications included that large farm buildings need sprinkler systems based on their use, size, and height, farm repair shops need to be separate structures depending on the materials they use, and that flame spread ratings (a formula used to determine flammability based on building size and materials used) need to be under a certain number in order for the structure to be approved.
