OFA has provided comments to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks in response to their consultation on streamlining requirements for waste disposal site service area and fill rate changes.
OFA supports efforts to streamline regulatory processes but urges the province to maintain strong environmental oversight and public participation when approving increases to landfill service areas and fill rates.
OFA highlights potential impacts on farms and rural communities, including increased truck traffic, infrastructure wear, odour, noise, and environmental risks. While acknowledging that adjacent landowners would still be notified under the proposed process, OFA is concerned that removing Environmental Registry postings would reduce transparency and limit stakeholder input.
OFA recommends retaining public notice, opportunities for comment and appeal, and thorough site-specific impact assessments before approving any landfill expansions.
