OFA provides comments on the proposed updated Statement of Environmental Values (SEV) for the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation Parks (MECP). MECP’s proposed SEV states its commitment when developing Acts, regulations and policies to consider “the effects of its decisions on current and future generations, consistent with sustainable development principles.” OFA supports this consideration and believes that the highest and best use of our arable land is for agriculture. Land capable of supporting agricultural activity is a strategic resource worthy of preserving as it ensures a safe, sustainable supply of food, fibre, and fuel for Ontario, Canada and the world. The MECP’s draft updated SEV also states the MECP “will strive to integrate environmental considerations with social, economic and scientific considerations, as well as considerations raised by or related to Indigenous communities, when making decisions that might significantly affect the environment.” We note that agriculture is an integral part of the environment and has both social and economic components and therefore, it is critical that the impacts on agriculture are fully considered.
