OFA provides comments to the Great Lakes and Inland Waters Branch regarding a Municipal Wastewater and Storm water Management in Ontario discussion paper. OFA encourages ongoing, meaningful inclusion of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the agricultural industry to ensure that agriculture is not negatively impact and to maximize the opportunities for storm water and wastewater management provided by farms. OFA would like assurances that the Drainage Act and its provisions will not be lost through this initiative. Very detailed, accurate guidance must be provided on this to ensure agriculture is appropriately considered. Factors to consider include reducing sewage overflows and bypasses, and public reporting, changing the way storm water is managed in urban areas, updating policies related to the management of wastewater and the quality of Ontario’s water resources, promoting water reuse in Ontario, recovering resources from wastewater, improving the management of hauled sewage from private septic system, improving financial sustainability and improving public access to data on wastewater an stormwater discharges, and the quality of Ontario’s waters.
