OFA provided comments to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks regarding the Emissions Performance Standards (EPS) regulatory proposal. As an alternative to the federal Output-Based Pricing System under the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, the provincial EPS could better achieve Ontario’s economic and environmental goals. OFA recommended that performance standard assessments recognize the potential negative implications to the agri-food value chain. OFA supports broad agricultural sector exemptions from burdensome climate change policies. However, OFA recognizes that the Ontario greenhouse sector may benefit from being included under the provincial EPS instead of under the federal regulations. Therefore, OFA supports the greenhouse sector’s position to investigate this option and recommends that the government continue to consult with the sector. OFA committed to assisting government to develop a practical agricultural carbon offset credit system to incentivize enhanced environmental and ecological co-benefits from agricultural lands.
