OFA provided its support for the University of Waterloo’s proposed project for Ontario Farmers’ Adoption of Best Management Practices (BMPs). Farmers interact intimately with the natural environment every day, and an agricultural perspective to resource management is critical. OFA championed the development the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) program and Best Management Practices (BMPs) workbooks. OFA fully supports the stated objectives of the proposed project including investigating the patterns of farmer’s adoption of specific BMPs, analyzing factors that drive the patterns of adoption of specific BMPs, exploring casual mechanisms that give rise to the factors driving adoption of specific BMPs and producing recommendations for increasing adoption rates of BMPs. OFA believes the widespread adoption of BMPs is key to transitioning to more sustainable production systems. OFA offers in-kind support for this project proposal which will consist of promoting the survey to OFA members, providing feedback on research materials, adding to the interpretation of data analysis results, and reviewing draft reports.
