OFA provided feedback to Transport Canada as part of the consultation process on Strengthening One Canadian Economy through trade and transportation.
Canada’s trade competitiveness depends on reliable rail, highway, and marine transportation infrastructure. OFA calls for targeted federal investments to improve capacity, reliability, and safety across key trade corridors that support the movement of agricultural and other export products.
Key recommendations include:
- Invest in rail corridor upgrades and bottleneck reduction, particularly in Northern Ontario, while ensuring fair treatment of landowners and maintaining rail operator responsibilities for drainage, fencing, and crossings.
- Carefully assess the proposed Alto high-speed rail project to ensure clear economic benefits and minimize impacts on farmland and rural communities.
- Make four-laning of major east-west trade corridors, including Highways 11 and 17, a national priority to improve safety, reliability, and domestic freight movement.
- Accelerate approvals and investments in Canadian port and marine infrastructure to strengthen export capacity and reduce reliance on U.S. facilities.
OFA urges the federal government to strengthen Canada’s transportation network through practical infrastructure investments while minimizing impacts on rural communities and farmland.
