OFA has provided input to Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) as part of the consultation process for the Buy Canadian Policy Framework.
OFA urges PSPC to explicitly recognize food and agri-food as a strategic priority within the federal Buy Canadian Policy Framework, emphasizing that federal food procurement is a significant and recurring purchasing stream that supports national security, supply-chain resilience, and domestic economic stability. We highlight the high quality and nutritional value of Canadian-grown food and calls for increased access to local food in federal institutions such as defence and corrections. Key recommendations include updating the National Food and Beverage Procurement Strategy to prioritize Canadian food; embedding Canadian content requirements and reporting into procurement processes; conducting food origin audits; improving outreach and accessibility for small and medium-sized agri-food businesses; and appointing a Local Food Champion for Procurement. OFA also encourages alignment with provincial initiatives such as Ontario’s Buy Ontario Act and Local Food Act and supports the launch of the Small and Medium Business Procurement Program in spring 2026.
