OFA, together with a broad coalition of Canadian agriculture and agri-food organizations, is urging the Government of Canada to support a full 16-year renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The letter highlights CUSMA’s critical role in providing stability, predictability, and growth for the integrated North American agricultural market, including the tripling of agri-food trade value since 2005. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining key provisions, particularly those related to sanitary and phytosanitary measures, biotechnology, technical barriers to trade, and dispute settlement to support science-based regulation, innovation, and market access. Additionally, the letter stresses that renewing CUSMA without weakening its provisions is essential to safeguarding food security, supporting rural communities, and maintaining Canada’s global competitiveness, and affirms the sector’s readiness to work with government and North American partners to ensure the agreement continues to deliver benefits.
