Local Food

Overview

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) supports the intention of Bill 36: The Local Food Act. This legislation benefits local food promotion and presents an opportunity to build lasting support for Ontario’s farming and food sectors.

OFA believes the Act can go much further to address food deficiencies across Ontario by providing support for local economic development initiatives based on food systems, increasing food literacy programming in our school systems and improving food access. Long term changes in Ontarian’s food knowledge and access to local food will help drive the food economy and improve the overall health of our province.

With regards to local food systems, OFA wishes to again acknowledge the tremendous benefits of the $30 million now available in support for local food systems from the Ontario government. This is an excellent initiative to help jumpstart the goals of the many thousands of Ontarians who have become engaged in and enamoured by Ontario’s local food.

The OFA and its national and provincial colleagues have done considerable work in developing a strategic approach to our food system by creating a National Food Strategy®. The National Food Strategy focuses on long-term solutions to the significant and evolving challenges we face today. While national in scope, the NFS presents a number of key objectives that are under provincial authority. The National Food Strategy envisions a future where Ontarians will always have access to safe and nutritious food; and that consumers will choose foods that lead to a healthy lifestyle.  Essential to achieving these objectives, we need to invest in food awareness programs. Create educational campaigns to encourage Ontarians to value food as a source of nutrition and avoid waste. OFA can foresee Bill 36 – The Local Food Act as being the first legislative initiative that addresses these goals of the National Food Strategy. Local procurement is an important part of that but we suggest the opportunity now exists to pursue a more ambitious Bill.
